Essbase to Power BI
Conncise brings your Essbase data into Power BI automatically, and the outline comes with it: hierarchies, relationships and business logic. Totals match the cube, and drill-downs run all the way to the lowest level.
The cube can answer anything. Power BI keeps getting extracts.
Essbase is often the oldest system in the landscape and still the sharpest. Write a retrieve, pivot a dimension, and the answer is there. That speed never made it to Power BI. Dashboards run on extracts someone maintains, ad-hoc requests come back to Smart View, and analysts spend their days moving data instead of analyzing it.
Power BI has a connector.
The model is still yours to build.
Power BI ships with a native Essbase connector, and for straightforward pulls it works. It was built for an earlier generation of on-premises servers though. Recent releases (19c, 21c) are not supported, and no update has been announced.
Where it does connect, it delivers what connectors deliver: data. The outline structure stays behind, so the meaning of the cube has to be rebuilt by hand in Power BI. A table per dimension, relationships between them, rollups in DAX, plus and minus reapplied member by member. That work returns every time the outline moves.
Conncise makes its own connection. It reads the outline along with the data and generates the Power BI semantic model from both, automatically.

Connects to Essbase
Conncise connects to your cubes and reads the outline and data you scope. Nothing to install on the Essbase side.
Generates the model
Dimensions become tables, rollups become hierarchies, operators become aggregation logic. The Power BI model, built from your outline.
Follows the outline
You set the load schedule. When the outline changes, the next load carries the change into the model.
Totals match the cube.
An extract lands rows of numbers. The rollups and drill paths that give them meaning stay in the outline.
In Essbase the outline is the logic: what rolls where, what adds, what subtracts, which members are shared. Conncise carries that into the model, so Power BI aggregates the way the cube does.
- HierarchiesEach dimension's rollups, straight from the outline.
- Consolidation
operatorsMembers add or subtract as tagged in the outline. - Drill-downFrom top members down to level 0.
- Alternate
hierarchiesShared members, with totals that stay right. - All dimensionsThree or twelve, sparse or dense, the whole cube comes through.
Using Hyperion Planning?
Hyperion Planning stores its budgets and forecasts in Essbase cubes underneath. Conncise reads those cubes the same way it reads any other, so plan data arrives in Power BI with its structure: scenarios, versions, entities and accounts, rolling up as they do in Planning.
No separate product, no separate setup. The same connection covers it.
No burden on IT.
One installation in your own Azure tenant, secured by your own Entra ID. Wherever Essbase runs, on-premises or in the cloud, Conncise reaches it. Live within a week.
Common questions.
Is there a Power BI connector for Essbase?
Yes, Power BI has a native Essbase connector. It was built for older on-premises releases, newer versions are not supported, and what it moves is data. The model still has to be built by hand. Conncise generates the Power BI model from your outline automatically.
Does Conncise work with Hyperion Planning?
Yes. Planning keeps its budgets and forecasts in Essbase cubes, and Conncise reads those cubes directly. Plan data arrives in Power BI with scenarios, versions and rollups intact.
Do we need to change anything in Essbase?
No. Conncise only reads. The outline, your calc scripts and your security stay untouched.
Do numbers in Power BI match Essbase?
Yes. The outline's rollups and operators carry over, so the numbers in Power BI are the numbers a retrieve shows.
What happens when the outline changes?
The model follows the outline. A moved branch, a changed operator or a set of new members is in Power BI after the next load.
Does Conncise work with Essbase on-premises?
Yes. Wherever your Essbase runs, on-premises or in the cloud, Conncise connects to it the same way.
How long does implementation take?
Within a week. It installs in your own Azure tenant, and there is no modeling project to plan around it.
